Stump grinding is priced by the inch — measure across the widest point of the stump at ground level, bark to bark, and that number drives the cost. In Central Minnesota that works out to roughly $3.50–$5.00 per inch of diameter, so a typical 20″ stump lands in the $70–$100 range before options. Most of the cost of a small stump job is simply getting a machine to your property. Once we're set up, each additional stump is quick work — so we pass that back: 5 or more stumps takes 10% off the whole job, and 10 or more takes 15% off. Two things move the number most: access and cleanup. Tight access — squeezing through a gate or working inches from a foundation, fence, or septic — adds about 15%, because close-quarters grinding is slower and more careful. Leaving chips on site is always the cheapest route, and plenty of homeowners use them as free mulch.
Every stump gets ground below grade — deep enough to seed grass over the spot, and deeper on request if you're planting, building, or running a fence line through it. The cheapest finish is mounding the grindings over the hole to settle level over a season.
